I rise before you to attempt an oration,
in my hand I bear a libation of tears
for a village which by opening her eyes
was blinded, splintered like stoned glass,
and her children scattered in a race of rats.
I rise before you to mourn the Abuuzu.
Perhaps she was just a tree.
Perhaps she was a goddess.
Perhaps she never even stood there.
Yet for this village she stood in our square
for hundreds and hundreds of…
